The City College of New York women's basketball team was edged 77-72 by Hunter College on Friday evening. This marked the first conference victory for Hunter.
The Beavers (4-3, 2-2 CUNYAC) started the game off taking the lead. Hunter (3-5, 1-2 CUNYAC) was looking for their first conference victory and came out strong. The first half consisted of a lot of back-and-forth action between the conference foes. City continued to hold a lead until the Hawks tied it up 14-14. CCNY ended the first quarter up 16-14.
Hunter came into the second half strong as they continued to search for a conference win. City put up solid defense and continued to add to their lead. Hunter outscored CCNY 20-19 in the second quarter, but City remained in control. The Beavers went into the locker room with a 35-34 lead.
Robin Daley led the Beavers with 11 points in the first half, while
Tiara Brown led with seven rebounds. City shot an impressive seven-for-seven from the charity stripe. The Beavers had previously been 4-0 when leading at the half.
The Hawks came out strong in the third quarter. The Beavers continued to fight but was unable to stop Hunter from their three-pointers. The Hawks outscored the Beavers 22-15 in the third quarter.
In the final quarter, both teams battled hard for a victory. Hunter was able to hold onto their advantage throughout the fourth quarter to eventually take the game.
Tiara Brown came up big in the fourth quarter with last minute steals to keep the Beavers in the game, but the Beavers were unable to pull out a victory. Hunter took the game 77-72.
Brown notched a double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Daley recorded 17 points in the loss. City shot an impressive .867 from the free-throw line. City was unable to stop Hunter from behind-the-arc as they shot .563.
City will go up against non-conference opponent St. Joseph's Long Island on Monday, December 14 at 7 p.m. The game will take place in Nat Holman Gymnasium.
