Women's Basketball Suffers OT Loss to Lehman

The City College of New York women's basketball team suffered a loss in overtime to Lehman on Saturday afternoon at The Apex in the Bronx, New York.

City (12-8, 7-4 CUNYAC) took a quick 10-2 lead. Lehman (14-6, 9-2 CUNYAC) slowly chipped away at the lead, but CCNY held on. The final minutes of the first quarter contained a lot of back-and-forth action between the conference foes, but City held onto a 24-16 lead.

The Lightning took control in the second quarter as the Beavers tried to hold on to their lead. Lehman went on a 4-0 run to cut the deficit 26-21. It was a slow comeback, but Lehman managed to tie the game 38-38 with 58 seconds left. City then took the lead 40-38, but two costly turnovers by the Beavers put Lehman in the lead 42-40 as the two teams headed into the locker room.

City was shooting .419 from the field, while Lehman shot .433 during the first half. Tiara Brown led the Beavers with 13 points and nine rebounds in the first half.

Lehman took a big 50-42 lead to start the third quarter, but CCNY went on a 7-0- run to trail 50-49. City continued to battle and tied the game 52-52 before the lead switched back-and-forth between the two teams. Going into the fourth quarter the Beavers and Lehman were tied 55-55.

The fourth quarter, much like the rest of the game, was a close and intense battle. Both teams sought a conference victory as the CUNYAC Championship is fast approaching. Lehman took a 65-61 lead, but CCNY was not far behind and the Beavers tied the game for the ninth time with the score 71-71. For the first time this season, City would see an overtime game with both teams tied 73-73.

In overtime, Lehman was the first to take the lead, and was just able to hold on. Taylor Pompilio made a layup to bring the Beavers within two with the score 82-80, but when Ameley Del Rrosario of Lehman made one free-throw with four seconds left that put Lehman up 83-80. Unfortunately, four seconds was not enough time for the Beavers and they fell 83-30, but have a chance of revenge when they host Lehman on Sunday, February 14 at Nat Holman Gymnasium.

Tiara Brown notched a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Erika Richards added 19 points, while Liz Durchhalter recorded 16. Pompilio added eight points along with six assists.

City will face CSI on Tuesday, February 2 at Nat Holman Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
