After the most impressive season since 1994-95, the City College of New York women's basketball team fell 84-79 to No. 1 Lehman in the CUNYAC Semifinals.
CCNY (17-9) started the game off on a quick 7-0 run. Lehman (18-7) called time-out and was able to get right back into the game and tied it 9-9. The first quarter would contain a lot of back-and-forth action between the two as they fought to earn their way into the finals. In the first quarter alone the lead would change hands four times and the score would be tied 5 times. At the end of the first quarter, the score was tied 15-15.
The Lightning started the second quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 20-15 lead, but CCNY responded quickly and was able to tie the score 24-24. It was a close couple of minutes for the two teams, but Lehman would take the lead and go on a 14-0 run to take a huge 40-26 lead. As the clock wound down, the Beavers trailed 40-29 heading into halftime.
At the half,
Erika Richards led the Beavers with 12 points. Both
Tiara Brown and
Robin Daley grabbed four boards in the first half for City. CCNY shot .333 from the field, while Lehman shot .452.
Coming into the third quarter, the Beavers knew this was their highest-scoring quarter on record. It would be a tough match-up as Lehman stayed in control. The Lightning led by as much as 18 points in the third quarter, but City went on a 9-0 run to end the quarter and trail just 55-46 going into the final quarter.
With 10 minutes standing between the two teams and the finals, both teams fought hard. CCNY continued their hot streak from the third quarter and made it a 58-51 game. Lehman stayed in control and would not falter on their plan. Within the final minute of the game, City was able to bring the score within just five points, but that was made just out of reach by the Lightning. City would play hard until the final buzzer sounded with Lehman taking the game and advancing to the finals with a 84-79 point victory.
Richards finished the game with a career-high 37 points.
Tiara Brown notched her 18th double-double, while
