The City College of New York men's volleyball team postseason run ended in a 3-2 (23-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16, 15-10) loss to number four seeded York College on Tuesday night in Jamaica, New York.
From first serve, this match would prove to be a even battle between York and CCNY. In the first set, neither team could take a clear advantage. With the score tied 15-15, this was CCNY's time to make a move. After a 4-0 run, City took a 19-15 advantage, but as soon as it looked bright for City, York came back and tied it 19-19. It would go down to the final two points of the set, but the Beavers used an attack error by the Cardinals and a kill from
Sebastjano Aga to put them up 25-23 in the first set.
Set two started off much different than the first. York quickly took a 3-0 lead and seemed to take off without the Beavers being able to catch up. CCNY used strategic timeouts to slow down the Cardinals and get their momentum from the first set back. York held onto a 14-8 lead and it didn't look good for the Beavers. City used two attack errors and a kill to cut the deficit 19-14. It would still be York that would hold on for the victory in set two 25-20.
It wasn't deja vu, it was a completely new set as the third set looked exactly like the first. Neither team would be able to take a clear advantage as the score continued to go back-and-forth. The first clear advantage would not be until City went up 23-21, but even then the Cardinals would bring it right back within reach. It was just too late for the Cardinals though as City took the third set 25-23.
With City leading 2-1, they needed just one more set to advance to the semifinals. However, York was not about to give up that easily. To begin the fourth set, both teams exchanged points back and forth. It would be York that would capitalize off of four City attack errors, and a service error to take a 15-9 lead. CCNY would fight back, but the Cardinals used that advantage to propel them into a fourth set victory 25-16. With that victory, the Cardinals forced a fifth set.
The winner would head to the semifinals, the loser would be finished for the season. It all came down to who would get to 15 first. While it was a close set, York had the slight advantage 10-8. City would not give up though and fought hard to cut that deficit 12-10. However with two attack errors and a kill by York, that would be final points to push York into the semifinals. York took the fifth set 15-10.
Sebastjano Aga led the Beavers with 38 kills, his third highest kill total on the season.
Tommy Holzmacher and
David Cham added eight kills a piece.
Oleksandr Boychuk dished out 50 assists in the loss.
