CCNY WBB Tops New Rochelle In Home-Opener

New York, NY - The CCNY women's basketball team earned its first home win at the Nat Holman Gymnasium in a 79-70 victory over the College of New Rochelle in non-conference action Monday night. Junior Ashley Brooks broke out for a 18-point, 15-rebound double-double to lead the Lavender & Black.

The Lavender & Black got off to a hot start just off the get-go. CCNY hit four quick triples within the opening minutes to get out in front early. CCNY used a fast-hitting 17-to-nine run, carried by Elizabeth Zullo's nine points on 3-for-3 from the charity-strike to secure a 10 point lead at the end of the first period.

At the conclusion of the first half, CCNY entered the locker room with a 41-26 lead. The Beavers hit a combined 15-of-33 from the floor and 7-of-14 from long distance during the first 20 minutes.

New Rochelle began the third quarter with all the energy they lacked to open the contest; a jumper from Dar'neisha Brice got the Blue Angels to within five points at the 5:43 mark.  That would be the closest that the Blue Angels would get in the quarter. The Beavers ended the third quarter on a 14-4 run to take a double-digit lead into the final 10-minute stretch.

The Beavers entered the fourth with a 59-44 lead, but there were contentious moments in the final minutes of the game. The Blue Angels cut the lead down to two possession multiple times, but CCNY came up big in crunch time.  With 0:27 on the clock, holding a 74-70 lead, Debra Chan buried two free throws, followed by a basket by Brooks after a defensive stop that closed the door on the Blue Angels potential comeback.

The glass saw lots of action throughout the night. The Beavers pulled down a new season-high 52 rebounds, led individually by Brooks, Redwood, and LaSalle who combined for 30 boards.

Brooks led five CCNY scorers in double figures. She shot 8-of-13 from the field with one turnover in 38 minutes of play. She had four blocks and two assist in the win. Zullo had a season-high 12 points and was 4-of-4 from beyond the arc. Chan finished the night tallying 12 points along with three assists.

Senior Erica Redwood and junior Corina Coles each scored 11 points. In 34 minutes on the floor, Redwood had a season-high nine rebounds and dished out six assists. Coles's had six assists and shot 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Freshman Madison LaSalle added eight points and four assists off the bench.

The Lavender & Black return to the Nat Holman Gymnasium this Wednesday at 6 PM when they host the St. Joseph's College-LI Golden Eagles.
