Women's Basketball Defeats Medgar Evers In Final Regular Season Game, 77-47

NEW YORK, NY – With a strong first quarter effort, and a balanced offense attack, the City College of New York women's basketball program earned their eleventh win of the season. The Beavers outlasted the Medgar Evers Cougars in conference play to win with a 77-47 victory in their final regular season game. All of CCNY's players scored in double digits.

The Beavers had a hot shooting start in the first quarter. CCNY's Elizabeth Zullo would hit two three-pointers in the first three minutes of the game The Beavers took over the period going on a 20-3, pushing CCNY to an efficient opening frame; they shot 54% from the floor and led 29-7 as the second quarter began.

CCNY's second quarter was one of a hot-and-cold temperament. The Beavers missed ten straight shots, yet they ended the half with a comfortable 42-20 lead going into the recess. 

In the third quarter, CCNY would force the Cougars to turn the ball over five times. CCNY out scored Medgar in the quarter 13-8, to take a 27-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. 

In the fourth quarter, a layup from Erica Redwood gave CCNY their largest lead in the game of 30-points with 6:18 remaining in the game. 

Senior Erika Richards finished with a game-high 19 points and six steals. Junior Erica Redwood had her first double-double of the season with 12 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Senior Alexis Akridge scored posted 14 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Marissa Olsen scored 12 points, while both Debra Chan and Elizabeth Zullo ended with 10 points.

CCNY was dominant in the frame, scoring 40 points in the paint. The Beavers scored 12 second chance points, and 32 points off of the Cougars 35 turnovers.

As the 2016-17 regular season has now come to an end, CCNY will carry a 11-14 overall, and 6-10 CUNYAC into the postseason.  The team will earn the fifth seed. The Lavender & Black wil play host in the first round on the CUNYAC playoffs on Thursday, February 16 at 7:00 pm against the #8 Medgar Evers College.
