NEW YORK, NY – Early Friday afternoon, the City College men's volleyball team defended their home court in front of a packed house at the Nat Holman Gymnasium on Kids Day. The team welcomed students from P.S. 129 as their special guest for the day's match. The Beavers swept the Yeshiva University Maccabees in straight sets (25-14, 25-22, 25-11).
Freshmen Carlos Maldonado Madrid was catalyze for the Beavers in the match. Madrid ended the game with a career-high 19 kills, a game-high seven aces and seven digs. Senior Oleksandr Boychuk posted a game-high 26 assists, five digs and three aces. Junior David Cham also contributed well in the match, notching five kills, two aces and eight kills. Freshmen Seth Diaz finished the game with a season-high three solo blocks, while sophomore Sebastjano Aga recorded nine kills.
The Beavers jumped out to a early lead in the first set after three consecutive service aces from Oleksandr Boychuk, that put the team up 7-1. The momentum would continue for the Lavender & Black as they'd go on to earn a decisive 25-14 first set decision.
The second set was more competitive between both teams, going through seven lead changes in set. A service ace from Sebastjano Aga gave the home team a six point lead (18-13). CCNY would go on to win the set 25-22.
CCNY came out firing in the third set, leading it from start to finish. The team hit a match-best .400 in the final set. The Beavers recorded a total of ten kills and nine service aces to win the final set 25-11.
The Beavers will return to action next Thursday in conference action at Brooklyn College at 6PM.
