BROOKLYN, NY – Playing in the CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Championship Game for the first time in seven years, the third-seeded City College of New York women's soccer team (7-9-0) suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to John Jay (12-6-1), the No. 1 seed, at Brooklyn College Field on Saturday afternoon. The contest appeared headed to overtime until the Bloodhounds scored the game-winner with 90 seconds left.
John Jay had a number of quality scoring opportunities in the first 20 minutes, but goalkeeper
Catherine Langkamp (Bronx, NY) came up big for the Beavers, making five saves. CCNY then took the lead on its first scoring chance of the contest.
Gabrielle Duchaussee (Saratoga Springs, NY) got free on a breakaway and fired a point-blank attempt that was saved. The rebound went right to
Tatiana Zuluaga (Levittown, NY), who put it into the upper right corner for a 1-0 CCNY advantage.
Langkamp would continue to make that lead hold up with her stellar play in net. She ended up with 10 first-half saves, as the Beavers maintained their 1-0 edge despite being outshot 18-5 in the period.
In the 72nd minute, John Jay scored the equalizer. Langkamp made a save on CUNYAC Player of the Year Katie Healy's shot that went out for a corner kick. The Bloodhounds put three players in the box on the corner kick, and the ball eventually found the foot of Jamie Bilotti. She sent a rocket into an open area of the goal to tie the game with 17 minutes left.
Overtime seemed inevitable until the Bloodhounds found the back of the net again in the 89th minute. John Jay had a 3-on-1 breakaway, and Healy fed a through ball to Kimberly Robeldo. Her blast from 15 yards out snuck past Langkamp to give the Bloodhounds their first lead of the game. And that goal would prove to be the difference, as CCNY was unable to get a shot off in the final 90 seconds and John Jay won its first CUNYAC title.
Zuluaga's goal was her second of the tournament and third of the season. She also scored in the semifinal win over Lehman last week. Langkamp, meanwhile, was credited with 13 total saves.
The Bloodhounds held a 26-7 edge in shots, and Brittany Shaneberger recorded three saves for John Jay. Bilotti's goal was her third of the year, while Robeldo's game-winner was her 13th tally this season.
This was the Beavers' fourth all-time appearance in the CUNYAC Championship Game, and their first since 2012.
