NEW YORK – Reilly Boehm (Orlando, FL) and
Tianna Fumasoli (Elizaville, NY) combined for 45 points, and
Melanie Torres (Queens, NY) grabbed 16 rebounds, as the City College of New York women's basketball team rallied for a 65-56 victory over Lehman at Nat Holman Gymnasium on Wednesday. The Beavers (2-14, 2-5 CUNY Athletic Conference) trailed 28-22 at halftime, but outscored the Lightning (1-16, 1-6 CUNYAC) 43-28 in the second half to earn the win.
Boehm and Fumasoli each tallied 20 points for the third time this season. Boehm finished with 25 points to go along with eight assists, five rebounds and four steals. Fumasoli had 20 points and five boards in her first game back after missing two contests due to injury. Torres, meanwhile, recorded her third 16-rebound effort of the season.
Nahomi Zambrano (Bronx, NY) and
Harlean Williams (Staten Island, NY) added seven boards apiece. As a team, CCNY shot 33.8 percent (22-of-65) from the field, 33.3 percent (7-of-21) from long range, and 70 percent (14-of-20) at the free throw line.
It was a 12-12 game until Lehman's Nina Gill sank a three-pointer as time expired in the first quarter. The Lightning then opened the second quarter on a 10-0 spurt to increase their advantage to 25-12. However, CCNY ended the period with a 10-3 run of its own to pull within six, 28-22, at the break.
Lehman held a 30-28 edge when Fumasoli drove for a layup and was fouled. She drained the free throw to complete the three-point play and put the Beavers in front, 31-30, with 6:05 left in the third quarter. After the teams traded baskets, CCNY took the lead for good when Fumasoli hit a deep trey to make it 40-38 entering the final quarter.
A Boehm three-pointer started the fourth quarter, increasing the margin to five, and the Beavers extended their cushion to 51-42 on Fumasoli's three ball at the 6:54 mark. A trey by Zambrano gave CCNY its largest advantage of the night, 55-44, with 4:39 remaining, but Lehman responded with a 10-3 rally to pull within four, 58-54. However, a Fumasoli layup on the other end pushed the margin back to six, 60-54, and the Beavers held on for their second victory of the year.
Gill led the Lightning with a game-high 27 points. She added eight rebounds, four steals and two blocks. Fatomata Trawalleh contributed 16 points, eight boards and three assists, while Eriadna Vazquez secured 14 rebounds. The Lightning went 21-for-72 (29.2 percent) from the floor, 1-for-8 (12.5 percent) from three-point land, and 13-for-16 (81.3 percent) at the charity stripe.
CCNY continues its stretch of four games in eight days on Friday, when it visits Baruch (11-4, 5-2 CUNYAC) at 5:30 p.m. The Bearcats topped the Beavers by an 80-57 count when the sides met at Nat Holman Gymnasium on Jan. 4.
