BRONXVILLE, NY – After suffering its first two losses of the season on Saturday, the City College of New York men's volleyball team was back in action on Sunday afternoon at Sarah Lawrence. And the Beavers (7-2) returned to their winning ways with a dominant 25-15, 25-11, 25-11 victory over the Gryphons (1-8) at the Campbell Sports Center.
CCNY's offense was on fire all afternoon. The Beavers smacked 38 kills in the victory and hit a combined .353 (14 errors, 68 attempts), including .421 (11-3-19) in the second set and .455 (14-4-22) in the final frame. CCNY also had 16 service aces as a unit.
Vukasin Bozic (Belgrade, Serbia) led the way with 12 kills (on .588 hitting) and four aces.
Stormer Horton (Waimea, HI) hit .571 in the match, slamming eight kills without an error in 14 attempts.
Elijah Parks (Long Beach, NY) added seven kills and three aces off the bench.
Andrew Chan (Flushing, NY) finished with 29 assists and three aces, while
Jonathan Liao (Jackson Heights, NY) tallied a match-high eight digs.
It was tied 3-3 early in the first set when a Parks kill sparked a 14-4 rally that gave the Beavers a 17-7 lead. Sarah Lawrence scored the next four points to pull within 17-11, but
Omar Dervisevic (East Elmhurst, NY) ripped a kill on the next point to start a set-ending 8-4 run. Consecutive kills by Bozic closed out the 25-15 set win.
Sarah Lawrence claimed the first point of the second set before CCNY rattled off eight of the next 11 to build an 8-4 advantage. After the Gryphons got back within one at 8-7, Parks followed with a kill to begin an 11-2 spurt that extended the Beavers' lead to 19-9. A Bozic kill ended the frame again, as CCNY took the set, 25-11.
In the third set, it was all CCNY. The Beavers scored the first five points and extended their cushion to 13-2 on three consecutive Dervisevic aces. Sarah Lawrence trimmed its deficit to 17-8 before a Horton kill ignited a 6-1 spurt that brought CCNY within two points of victory. An
Alex Zhen (Brooklyn, NY) kill brought the Beavers to match point, then Bozic served an ace to finish off the set, 25-11, and the contest, 3-0.
For the Gryphons, Felix Massey had five kills and Ithai Diakov handed out six assists. Michael Yang, meanwhile, registered four digs.
The Beavers will now have a week off before concluding their nine-match road trip with a tri-match at King's next Sunday. CCNY faces Yeshiva (0-0) at 3 p.m., then takes on the host Monarchs (7-1) at 5 p.m.
