NEW YORK – On Saturday, the City College of New York men's volleyball team resumed its CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) schedule with a pair of matches at Baruch's ARC Arena. After falling to the host Bearcats (12-6, 4-0 CUNYAC) by a 25-17, 25-16, 25-19 count, CCNY (11-5, 2-1 CUNYAC) rebounded to post a 25-10, 25-16, 25-27, 25-15 victory over York (3-9, 0-4 CUNYAC).
Baruch jumped out to a 13-9 lead in the first set of CCNY's opening match before the Beavers rallied to cut their deficit to one at 13-12. However, the Bearcats responded with five of the next six points to increase their advantage to 18-13. Baruch used another 6-1 spurt to go up 24-16, and the Bearcats took the opening set by a score of 25-17.
After Baruch built a 7-4 cushion to start the second set,
Elijah Parks (Long Beach, NY) slammed a kill to start a 5-1 CCNY run that gave the Beavers a 9-8 advantage. The Bearcats captured the next five points, though, to regain the lead, 13-9. CCNY got back within one at 13-12, but Baruch finished the set on a 12-4 spurt to clinch a 25-16 win.
The Bearcats again raced out to an early lead in the third set, pulling ahead 9-4. After the Beavers trimmed the margin to one at 15-14, Baruch responded with a 7-1 spurt to regain a 22-15 edge. Baruch won the set, 25-19, to close out a 3-0 victory.
Carlos Maldonado Madrid (Honduras) smashed a team-high seven kills to go along with six digs and two blocks.
Andrew Chan (Flushing, NY) handed out 18 assists, while
Jonathan Liao (Jackson Heights, NY) registered a match-best 15 digs for the Beavers.
Steven Lopez paced the Bearcats with 12 kills, and Andrew Tsororos added nine kills on .316 hitting. Stallone Shankar distributed 31 assists, while Justin Iloulian finished with six digs and four blocks. Rabsang Andrugtsang collected 12 digs for Baruch, which hit .180 (34 kills, 18 errors, 89 attempts) as a team.
Against York, the Beavers dominated the first set. There were two early ties before a Maldonado Madrid kill gave CCNY the lead for good. The 21-6 run included a string of 10 consecutive points that featured three
Stormer Horton (Waimea, HI) service aces. CCNY hit a combined .429 (11-2-21) in the 25-10 set win.
It was more of the same in the second set, as the Beavers posted a .385 (14-4-26) hitting percentage. York took an early 3-1 lead before a Parks kill started a 5-1 rally that gave CCNY a 6-4 advantage. After the Cardinals tied it at 6-6, Parks ripped another skill to spark a 17-5 spurt that put the Beavers in front 23-11. A Horton kill finished off the set, 25-16, as CCNY took a 2-0 lead in the match.
There were seven ties and four lead changes in a back-and-forth third set. York scored the first three points before CCNY rallied to go up 9-8. After the Cardinals pulled ahead 17-13, the Beavers responded with eight of the next 12 points to even the score at 21-21. CCNY fought off a pair of set points, then had one of its own at 25-24. However, York won the next three points to capture the set, 27-25, and extend the match.
In the fourth set, CCNY rattled off the first five points and never looked back. York pulled within four at 12-8 before a kill by
Abdullah Khalid (Hicksville, NY) began a 10-3 rally that extended the Beavers' cushion to 22-11. A Khalid kill brought CCNY to match point at 24-15, and the Beavers finished off the 3-1 victory with a 25-15 set win. CCNY hit .406 (15-2-32) in the fourth set.
Three Beavers had double-digit kills, led by
Vukasin Bozic's (Belgrade, Serbia) 13 kills. He added 11 digs to complete his fifth double-double of the season. Khalid hit .692 with 10 kills, and Parks also recorded 10 kills. Maldonado Madrid finished with eight kills and four aces, while Horton tallied eight kills (on .583 hitting) and three aces. Chan, meanwhile, distributed 42 assists. Liao registered a match-high 17 digs, as CCNY held a 47-37 edge in that category. As a team, the Beavers hit .274 (50-18-117).
For the Cardinals, David Heylinger, Jr., finished with 14 kills and six digs. Akil Vaughn contributed 12 kills, while John Vitor notched 28 assists and eight digs. Juan Rodriguez added nine digs for York, which hit .096 (36-25-114) as a team.
CCNY begins a three-match homestand on Tuesday night, when Brooklyn (6-9, 1-1 CUNYAC) visits Nat Holman Gymnasium at 7 p.m. The Beavers had dropped two straight against the Bulldogs before winning in four sets last season.
