New York, NY - The City College of New York Department of Athletics & Recreation and the college community are deeply saddened by the news of Pedro L'Official '71's passing. We share our deepest sympathies and condolences with Pedro's family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.
Pedro, a true, sturdy son of City College, was a proud alumnus of CCNY. His dedication to the college was unwavering. A standout student-athlete during his time dawning Lavender and Black (1969-71), he competed for the men's cross country and track & field programs, achieving high individual and team success during his college career. He was inducted into the CCNY Athletics Hall of Fame in 1986, a testament to his enduring legacy at our college.
Pedro, a native of the Bronx, New York, earned his undergraduate degree in Psychology from CCNY in 1971 and his master's degree in Counseling and Personnel Services from Hunter College in 1973.
Upon graduating, he began his professional career at CUNY, working at Hunter College as the Associate Director of Financial Aid for over 25 years (1973-99). He later served as the cross country and track & field coach at St. David School in New York City for over a decade (1999-2010) before returning to his alma mater at CCNY in 2010.
Pedro's contributions to the CCNY community were invaluable. He served as the athletic department's recruiting coordinator, leading recruiting efforts and the onboarding processes for all incoming student-athletes. His thorough knowledge of the history and nuances of the college and the CUNY university system made him a vital resource and asset to the staff, coaches, student-athletes, and college community. We are deeply grateful for his service.
Pedro also served as an executive board member of the Athletics Alumni Varsity Association. He served as vice president, stewarding support for various programs and events for the Alumni Association, athletics programs, and student-athletes. He was named the incoming president this past spring (2024).
Pedro is survived by his sons Alex and Peter, his daughter Janelle, and four grandchildren.
