Brooklyn, NY - The City College of New York men's volleyball team fell to Brooklyn College, 3–0, on Thursday evening in CUNYAC play at the West Quad Center. Brooklyn secured the victory by set scores of 25–18, 25–22, and 25–22.
CCNY showed flashes of strong play throughout the match, particularly in the second and third sets, but Brooklyn capitalized on key runs to close out each frame.
In the opening set, the Beavers stayed within striking distance early before Brooklyn used a late push to pull away for the 25–18 win. CCNY responded with a more efficient attack in the second set, recording 10 kills with just four errors, but the Bulldogs edged the Beavers 25–22 to take a two-set lead.
The third set proved to be the most competitive, with CCNY battling throughout and keeping the score tight. However, Brooklyn closed the match with another 25–22 decision to complete the sweep.
Three Beavers shared the team lead with seven kills apiece, as sophomores
Mahmoud Tayeh,
Nana Boateng, and
Amir Nabiyev paced the CCNY attack. Fresham
Ruben Santiago led the offense with 13 assists, while rookie
Moustafa Elsabagh anchored the defense with a team-high eight digs.
At the net, graduate-student
Antonio Oliveira-Nurse turned in a strong defensive performance with six blocks, helping CCNY total seven blocks as a team.
Brooklyn was led offensively by Aaron Siu, who recorded a match-high 10 kills while adding nine digs.
CCNY will look to bounce back in its next CUNYAC matchup as conference play continues.
