CCNY Athletics Faculty Mentoring Program

Mission:
CCNY Athletics seeks to provide a holistic student-athlete experience for our students where we focus on academic achievement, personal development, career development and athletic achievement.  Through this program, we hope to establish a mutually-beneficial relationship between the CCNY faculty and athletic teams while fostering the NCAA Division III philosophy of integrating athletics and academics on campus.  As we seek to find new ways to support the academic efforts of our student athletes, we hope to identify faculty members who will support this mission through the mentoring program.   By partnering faculty with athletic teams, this collaboration will support a cohesive learning experience that can serve to bridge their academic pursuits with their athletic involvement.

Philosophy:
The Athletics Faculty Mentor Program is an avenue to better facilitate the integration of athletics and academics. The faculty mentor will interact with the assigned team to more fully understand the realities associated with balancing academic and athletic obligations. Learning and interacting with caring faculty role models is a corner stone of the Athletics Faculty Mentor Program.
Faculty mentors provide an additional resource across all areas of the University – faculty, administration, staff, students and coaches – in encouraging and reinforcing the ties between the athletic and academic pursuits of the student-athlete.

Faculty mentors are role models who willingly connect to the student-athletes to provide support through additional counsel and advice when specific issues arise, particularly in the areas of social issues and academics.

Faculty mentors are dedicated to the idea of building a harmonious connection between the academic, athletic and social cultures of our campus.

The role of a Faculty Mentor includes:
To promote understanding and communication between faculty, athlete, and students.
Provide student-athletes with an additional contact for academic questions
Meet with prospective student-athletes when they come on campus
Attend practices and games when available
Encouraged to attend end of the season banquet/celebration
Serve as a guest coach for at least one competition in the designated sport
Allowed to be on the sideline during competition.
Encouraged to attend special team functions, cook-outs, dinners, lunches, adventure activities.
May travel with team to selected games.
Receive team apparel.
Be a big fan!

Each faculty mentor will have their own style and way of interacting with the student-athletes and coaches. The amount of time spent with the team will vary from mentor to mentor. It is not necessary for the mentor to be an expert in the sport field. They are there to create a partnership between faculty, student-athletes, and athletic administrators.
Please contact Faculty Athletics Representative, Nkem Stanley-Mbamelu at nstanley@ccny.cuny.edu if interested in serving as a mentor.
