The City College of New York men's soccer team picked up a conference victory when they edged John Jay 2-1 Saturday afternoon.
City (7-6-0, 3-3-0 CUNYAC) took control of the match early as they looked for their third conference victory. John Jay (5-10-0, 3-4-0 CUNYAC) tried to slow down the Beavers and gain control. Both teams fought hard for possesion in the early minutes of the match. The Beavers struck first with a penalty kick taken by
Kenan Redzematovic. As he made the shot, City now had a 1-0 lead.
CCNY tried to maintain their lead, but John Jay scored at the 27' to tie the match 1-1. The first half continued to be a back-and-forth battle for control as the match was tied 1-1 going into halftime.
With an intense matchup and a tie game, both teams challenged the other. It was a matchup of who could control the possesion and get a shot off. As the minutes of the second half began to wind down, CCNY looked harder for opportunities to score. At the 87',
Anthony Scarallo was set up to take a penalty shot. Scarallo put the ball on goal and scored to put City up 2-1 with only eight minutes left to play. The Beavers held on for those final eight minutes and picked up the conference victory 2-1.
Maxwell Berkow had five saves in the victory. The Beavers took 15 shots, with seven going on goal and John Jay had 14 shots with six going on goal.
The team will face Baruch on Wednesday, October 21 at Randall's Island Field #80.
