The City College of New York women's basketball team fell 53-56 to Keiser University in the first day of the Keiser University Florida Tournament in West Palm Beach, Florida. In the second day, City fell 84-71 to Emmanuel College.
Day Two (vs. Emmanuel)CCNY (6-5) came into the second day searching for a victory in the Florida Tournament. City quickly took the lead, but the first quarter remained close. The Beavers only held a one point advantage going into the second quarter with the score 19-18.
The Saints turned on their engines in the second quarter, but City continued to fight. The Beavers quickly put up big points, while also making stops. Emmanuel outscored the Beavers 21-17 in the second quarter to take a 39-36 lead going into the locker room.
With their engines still revving from the second quarter, Emmanuel was able to take control in the third quarter. City knew they had to keep fighting in order to keep this game within reach, but the Saints would not make that easy. The Beavers used all of their teamwork in the third quarter to put something together but was outscored 27-14.
In the final quarter, the Saints took their largest lead of the game, but the Beavers would not let that stop them from battling back. Even though City was able to outscore the Saints 21-18, the Saints took the victory.
Tiara Brown notched a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
Erika Richards and
Robin Daley both added 10 points.
Alexis Akridge recorded 14 points for her first game for the Beavers.
City will face the College of Staten Island for their first CUNYAC game of the new year on Tuesday, January 5. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
Day One (vs. Keiser)City (6-4) started off the Keiser University Florida Tournament off looking for a victory over hosts, Keiser University. Keiser (7-7) was not as easy to hold off. The Seahawks took the lead and would not look back. In a back-and-forth action between the non-conference foes, but City was unable to hold off Keiser. City trailed 10-15 after the first quarter.
The Seahawks took control in the second quarter. While City continued to search for ways to chip at the lead, Keiser continued to find ways to maintain control. City continued to trail 15-33 at the half.
Coming out the locker room, City would not let Keiser take control. CCNY dominated in the second half and made sure they put up big stops. In the third quarter, City outscored Keiser 17-11, but still trailed the Seahawks.
It all came down to the final quarter for the two teams as they battled out for a victory. CCNY continued to dominate as they had in the third quarter, but it would prove to not be enough for a victory. The Beavers outscored Keiser 21-12 in the final quarter, but fell by just three points.
Erika Richards led the Beavers with 23 points.
Tiara Brown notched a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds. City shot .351 from the field for the game.
Up next for the Beavers in the Keiser University Florida Tournament is Emmanuel College. City will face off against the Saints on December 31 at 1 p.m.
