Men's Soccer Tops NJCU 3-1 In Season Opener

The City College of New York men's soccer team picked up their first victory of the season when they won 3-1 over New Jersey City University in Jersey City, New Jersey.

NJCU (0-1-0) took control of the first half when they scored within the first 10 minutes of the match. CCNY (1-0-0)  took three shots in the first half, with two of them on goal, but John Riggs of NJCU was able to put up big saves. Maxwell Berkow put up two saves in the first half to keep the Gothic Knights lead only at one as the team went into halftime.

City College of New York came into the second half longing for a victory to begin their 2015 campaign. Captain Abdul Rashid Abdulai scored at the 60:25 mark with an assist from Augustine Amissah. With the match at a tie, both teams fought hard for the lead. CCNY gained the advantage when Anthony Scarallo made a long throw that went through NJCU's goalkeepers hands for an own goal and then added onto the score with a goal by Amissah.

The Beavers will look to continue the strong start to the season when they travel to play SUNY Maritime on Saturday, September 5 at 6 p.m.
