Women's Basketball Hands Brooklyn First Conference Loss

The City College of New York women's basketball team handed Brooklyn College their first conference loss with a 63-53 victory Wednesday evening. 

City (10-7, 5-3 CUNYAC) started the game off with a quick 6-0 run, but,Brooklyn (12-5, 8-1 CUNYAC) followed closely behind. The score remained close for the first quarter, but CCNY never gave up the lead and had a three-point advantage going into the second quarter. 

Leading 19-16 to start the second quarter, City and Brooklyn remained close. The Bulldogs were able to tie the score, but then CCNY took off and would go back up six points. It was a tough-fought battle for the conference foes, but the Beavers remained on top. City only allowed Brooklyn to score nine points in the second quarter, which is tied for the lowest points allowed in the second quarter this season. 

City went into the locker room holding a 28-25 lead. The Beavers held an 8-1 advantage when leading at the half. 

The Bulldogs came into the third quarter trying to hold onto their perfect record against conference opponents. They took their first lead of the game with just under five minutes left in the third quarter. City continued to fight and look for big ways to get their advantage back. Going into the fourth and final quarter, CCNY led 40-37. 

The Beavers never gave up their lead in the fourth quarter. It was a tough 10 minutes for both teams as both continued the battle for victory. City held the advantage and then posted a huge 63-53 victory over Brooklyn. 

Tiara Brown notched her 12th double-double of the season with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Robin Daley recorded her first double-double of the season with 13 points and a season-high 11 rebounds. Erika Richards added a team-high 16 points in the victory. Liz Durchhalter came up big with a career-high seven steals, while the team totaled 16. The 16 steals by the Beavers is tied for their season-high. City finished the game shooting 31.0 percent from the field and 38.1 from behind the arc. 

City will face York College on Friday, January 22 at 5 p.m. The game will take place in Nat Holman Gymnasium.
