Men's Volleyball Opens Season Against Emerson

The City College of New York men's volleyball team opened their 2016 season with a loss to Emerson College on Saturday morning. The Beavers fell 0-3 (15-25, 12-25, 18-25) in Boston, Massachusetts.

While the Beavers (0-1) took the opening point, Emerson (1-2) took the next three to take a 3-1 lead. While it seemed like CCNY was holding on in the first set, the Lions went on a 5-0 run for a big 11-3 lead. The Beavers chipped away at the score, but the Lions continued to tack on points as they took the first set 25-15.

The second set was very similar to the first set as the Beavers fought hard for a victory. The Lions were able to take the lead early, and hold on for the remainder of the set. Emerson's biggest run came when they took a 5-0 run to go up 14-5. The Lions had one more 5-0 run in the second set that put them up 24-11. CCNY fought but fell 25-12 in the second set.

City came out strong in the third set as they continued to search for their first victory of the new season. The set contained a lot back-and-forth action between the two foes. Emerson took an 18-13 lead, but CCNY did not give up. They fought hard and did not give up, but the Lions had the advantage and took the match with the 25-18 win in the third set.

"They were fighting," said head coach Andrijana Todorovic. "The players were nervous because it was the first match, and we had four freshman on the court. Emerson is a strong team, but our kids were fighting."

Edmund He and Sebastjano Aga led the Beavers with five kills a piece. Oleksandr Boychuk dished out 11 assists, while Kai Zhao and Ejil Patano recorded three digs each.

City will travel to face Elms College on Tuesday, January 26. Match is set for 7 p.m.
