The City College of New York men's volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-12) to New Jersey City University on Thursday evening. This was the Beavers first home match of the early 2016 season.
To begin the first set, both teams exchanged points back-and-forth, but NJCU (5-2) took an early 7-3 lead. City (1-5) would not go quietly and used their timeouts to bring the Beavers back into the match. City was able to cut the Gothic Knights lead 11-10. The set would remain close, but NJCU would ultimately take the first set 25-21.
NJCU went off on a 3-0 start in the second set behind the serving of Erick Nascimento. It wasn't long before the Gothic Knights had an 11-5 lead. While CCNY fought back it would not be enough in the second set. NJCU would continue to add onto their lead and take the second set 25-16.
City and NJCU exchanged points back and forth to start the third set. NJCU took a 9-5 lead, but City tied the set 11-11. The Gothic Knights then went on a 4-0 run to take a 15-11 lead, but CCNY continued to chip away at the lead. The Beavers fought hard and tied the set 21-21 behind
Oleksandr Boychuk's serves, but in the end NJCU would walk away with a victory.
Sebastjano Aga led the Beavers with nine kills, while
Edmund He tallied six. Boychuk dished out 10 of the teams 18 assists.
City will travel to John Jay for a CUNYAC multi-match on Monday, February 15. They will first face Lehman at 11 a.m. and then York at 3 p.m.
