Men's Volleyball Splits at CUNYAC Multimatch

The City College of New York men's volleyball team split on the day at the CUNYAC Multi-match that took place on the campus of John Jay. First they swept Lehman 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-19) then they fell to York (37-35, 25-20, 17-25, 25-23)

Match One (vs. Lehman)
Lehman started off the first set on a 4-0 run. City retaliated and took the next five set points to go up 5-4. The two teams then exchanged points until the Beavers took a big 18-10 lead. It was here that CCNY sealed their fate for the first set victory, but they would have to fight hard as they took the first set 25-19.

The second set would only prove how tough these two conference opponents would fight to get a victory. It was an exchange of points back-and-forth until Lehman took an 11-9 lead. It would seem as though the Lightning would continue to take two point leads in the second set, but City had other plans. After tying the score 22-22 the Beavers fought and took a 24-22 advantage. Lehman recorded one point, but the Beavers took the second set victory 25-23 with a kill by Kai Zhao

For the third straight set, Lehman started off with the lead. With only one set holding them away from a conference victory, the Beavers dug deep for a win. There was a lot of back-and-forth action between the conference foes, just like in the first two sets. City led 22-19 and then went on a 3-0 run coming off of a kill and two attack errors to take the third set and victory over Lehman.

Sebastjano Aga led the Beavers with 15 points, while Edmund He recorded 11. Oleksandr Boychuk dished out 27 of the teams 31 assists. Aga also tallied eight digs and two block assists. City recorded a .179 attack percentage on the match.

Match Two (vs. York)
The Beavers and York were clearly ready for a match when the two teams stepped onto the court. The entire first set of the match was kept so close that it didn't just go slightly over the 25 points needed to take the set, it went well beyond that. Both teams came to pick up a victory and looked to get it started in the first set. York took the upper hand taking the first set 37-35.

In the second set, the two teams would remain close, but the Cardinals were able to pull away early and keep their advantage. The Beavers would not give up as they continued to fight in the second set, but York used a .400 attack percentage to take the second set 25-20.

City quickly turned it around in the third set. It would be York's turn to play catch-up as CCNY continued to attack and take the lead. Compared to their .400 attack percentage in the second, CCNY held the Cardinals to a .071 attack percentage in the third set. City took the third set 25-17.

As was with the first three sets, the fourth set would be an intense match-up. York needed this set to take the match, and CCNY needed the set to force a fifth. Both teams exchanged points back-and-forth where neither really took a big lead. While it was close for a while, York was able to take that advantage that pushed them to victory with a 25-23 win in the fourth set.

Sebastjano Aga recorded 34 kills and 19 digs in the loss. Edmund He tallied 11 kills and 10 digs for the Beavers. Oleksandr Boychuck would dish out 49 assists for City. As a team, CCNY recorded 6 blocks and had a .212 attack percentage on the match.

The Beavers will travel back to John Jay on Thursday, February 18 to face the Bloodhounds. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
