The City College of New York women's basketball team defeated York College 80-30 in the quarterfinal game to move onto the CUNYAC Seminfinals. The Beavers have never advanced to the semifinals as long as they have been hosting the CUNYAC Tournament, which they began hosting in 2007.
York (6-20) started the first quarter on a 4-0 run, but the Cardinals would not hold that lead for long. City (17-9) then held the Cardinals scoreless for the remainder of the first quarter. In that time CCNY recorded 17 points. The Cardinals four points in the first quarter is tied for the lowest points allowed by an opponent in the first quarter.
City continued to dominate in the second quarter as York looked to make a comeback. It was a slow second quarter for the Cardinals, but they were able to get some stops and put up some points. As the clock wound down for halftime, the Beavers took a 35-12 lead.
City shot .400 from the field while holding York to a .190 field goal percentage.
Erika Richards led the Beavers with 14 points at the half.
Tiara Brown led the team with six rounds. Brown and Richards both dished out four assists in the first half. City forced York to commit 21 turnovers in the first half and managed to turn that into 16 points.
The Beavers came out strong as they always do in the third quarter. York had their best quarter, but it they had nothing to stop CCNY. City continued to used the entire team as part of the victory. City outscored the Cardinals 24-12 in the third quarter.
CCNY put up another big quarter as the minutes wound down in the fourth quarter. The team fought together to pull out a victory to push them into the semifinals. York only scored six points in the fourth quarter, while CCNY scored 21. City took the game to advance to the semifinals 80-30.
Tiara Brown notched her 17th double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Richards ended the game with 16 points, while
Robin Daley added 10. Every single Beaver scored in the victory. City forced York to commit a season-high 38 turnovers and tallied a season-high 19 steals.
The Beavers will face Lehman in the semifinals on Wednesday, February 24 at 6 p.m. at Nat Holman Gymnasium.
