The City College of New York men's volleyball team edged Medgar Evers 3-1 (25-14, 25-15, 23-25, 25-23) on Thursday evening. The Beavers improve to 3-9, 3-4 CUNYAC while Medgar Evers falls to 0-11, 0-6 CUNYAC.
CCNY took control early in the first set. The Beavers were up 9-4 and continued to dominate the Cougars. Medgar Evers chipped slowly away at the lead, but was unable to make any big plays to slow down the domianting Beavers. City took the first set 25-14.
The Beavers started off the second set the same way they started the first set. Medgar Evers kept it close and trailed only 6-10 early in the second set. It would continue to be CCNY that would hold the lead. City led 20-14 and then went on a 4-0 run from two service aces from
Cuong Quoc Tran and a kill by
David Cham to give them a 24-14 lead. The Beavers took the second set 25-15.
It would be the Cougars that would take the lead early in the third set. Medgar Evers was up 8-1 early in the third set, but the Beavers would fight hard to get back into it. CCNY would continue to chip away at the lead and eventually tie the score 22-22. It would be a close ending to the third set, but Medgar would come out on top 25-23.
The start of the fourth set was an exchange of points between the conference foes. It would be Medgar Evers that would take a 9-5 lead. The Beavers fought hard and tied the set 20-20. The Beavers would then go up 24-21. However, the Cougars would not let them take the match that easily and came back to trail just 24-23. A service error by Medgar Evers gave the Beavers the final point to seal their 25-23 victory.
Edmund He and
Sebastjano Aga both tallied 10 kills and 10 digs a piece for the Beavers.
David Cham added nine kills for the Beavers and recorded four block assists.
Cuong Quoc Tran tallied five service aces in the victory.
Oleksandr Boychuk dished out 24 assists in the victory.
The Beavers will travel to face Sarah Lawrence Friday, February 26.
