Men's Volleyball Holds Off Lehman

The City College of New York men's volleyball team defeated Lehman College 3-2 on Tuesday evening in Nat Holman Gymnasium. City improved to 7-11, 6-6 CUNYAC, while Lehman fell to 4-16, 2-10 CUNYAC.

If the first set didn't give you an idea of how the match would pan out then you would learn quickly. Both teams came out in the first set on a war path. Neither team could take a clear advantage as both exchanged points back-and-forth. City took a 20-16 lead, but Lehman came back and took the next four points to tie the set 20-20. It would then be the Lightning that would take control and while CCNY tried to stop them Lehman took the first set 25-21.

City would not let Lehman get away with the match as they came out even stronger in the second set. It would be a long string of points exchanged, similar to the first set, but this time with a different outcome. CCNY on a 7-0 run to take a huge 20-13 advantage. Lehman would come back and get some points, but not before the Beavers attacked and came up with a 25-16 second set victory.

CCNY took a quick 7-4 lead, but as we had learned about the match already, this would not be for long. The Lightning were able to tie it all up at nine points. With Lehman and CCNY fighting for a victory, the crowd cheered and watched hoping their team would take the advantage for the match. This would be the closest set played and no one knew who would take it. With the score tied 23-23 it would fall onto the final two points. Lehman's two attack errors gave CCNY a 25-23 victory and held a 2-1 advantage on the match.

Lehman took the advantage first with a 5-2 lead, but City came right back into it and tied the set 9-9. The fourth set mirrored the third set, except it would fall in Lehman's favor. City came out strong, but it would not be enough. With the score tied 23-23, it would be CCNY's attack errors that pushed the Lightning to a 25-23 victory.

Coming out in the fifth set the Beavers looked like they had started off a new match. City started the match off with a 10-1 lead. Lehman would fight, but the Beavers were unstoppable in the fifth set. It was a quick set as City would not give up and they took the fifth set and match with a 15-6 victory.

Sebastjano Aga led the Beavers with 29 kills and 22 assists. Tommy Holzmacher added 11 kills for City. Cuong Quoc Tran and Oleksandr Boychuk both recorded 10 and 13 digs, respectively. Oleksandr also dished out 41 assists in the victory. David Cham recorded only seven kills for CCNY, but tallied 10 digs, three solo blocks and three block assists.
