New York, NY – The City College of New York men's basketball team ran its winning streak to five games with an 87-76 victory in non-conference action over The College of New Rochelle at the Nat Holman Gymnasium Tuesday night.
Senior David Solano led the Beavers with 22-points, hitting seven three pointers in the game. Senior Mark Richards picked up a double-double with 21 points, a season- high 11 rebounds and two steals. Senior Khalil Hamer had 17 points (3-for-5 from the arc), eight assists, five rebounds, and two steals for the Lavender & Black. Senior Robbie Dionisio posted nine points, four rebounds, one block and one steal. Junior Salvatore Palazzolo came off the bench, chipping in 10-points and eight rebounds.
The game began with missed scoring opportunities from both teams. New Rochelle got on the boards first (16:59) with a layup from Glen O'Loughlin. CCNY responded back with a three-pointer from Robbie Dionisio to go up 4-to-3.
Later in the first half, New Rochelle would hold a six point lead (20-14) after free throws from Dante Pulido with 10:14 remaining. City College would regain the lead (25-22) with jump shot from Mark Richards with 6:19 left in the half.
New Rochelle ended the first half with a 35-to-32 lead over CCNY.
In the second half, New Rochelle began with a 9-to-2 run early in the half to hold a 45-to-35 lead.
The Beavers would fight their way back into the game. Khalil Hamer would knock down a three-pointer (10:37) to bring the game within three points (60-57).
Back to back layups from Salvatore Palazzolo gave the Beavers a one point lead (61-60) over the Blue Angels with 9:49 left in the game.
Late three-point baskets from David Solano would help the team build a 12-point lead (84-72) with under a minute remaining. CCNY closed out the game to win 87-76.
The City College Men's Basketball team now improves to 14-9 overall. The team will play Hunter College next at home on Friday (Feb. 10) at 7:00pm.
