Bronx, NY - The City College baseball program split Sunday's doubleheader against CUNYAC rival Lehman by dropping the first game 11-5, followed by a 9-7 comeback victory in game two.
Lehman jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first two innings. Lehman drove in the first run with a double in the first and a home run in the second. The Beavers evened the score at 2-2 in the third, when Anthony Cacchione blasted a shot to right field to drive in Adrian Pena and Edgar Arango.
CCNY pulled ahead after Brendan Murphy scored a run in the fourth. In the fifth, the Lavender and Black added two more runs off Anthony Sautter's double to center field, plating Cacchione and Pena.
Lehman's strong hitting would lift the team in the fifth inning. Lehman scored nine runs off seven hits in the inning, including a three-run homer and a grand slam in the game one victory.
The Beavers rebounded to take game two, 9-7. Lehman took a 3-0 lead in the first. The Lightings' Chris Lopez hit a three-run homer to take the earlier lead. In the second, Lehman's lead grew to 5-0 from two-run double gave.
In the third, Adrian Pena advance to first on a walk and scored Elmy Antonio for the team's first run. On the next at-bat, Cacchione doubled down the right field line scoring both Stephen Peters and Jonathan Abreu.
CCNY added another run in the fourth, when Abreu doubled to left field plating Peters.
Lehman scored two runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 7-4.
CCNY scored five times in the bottom of the sixth. Saeed Rasool scored on a Antonio base hit. Pena drove in Peters and Antonio with a double to center field. Cacchione scored CCNY's eighth run of the game on an error by the third basemen, then Anthony Sautter plated Pena with a single up the middle making the score 9-7. Cacchione pitched a complete-game and struck out eight batter for his third win of the 2017 campaign.
