NEW YORK, NY – The visiting Hunter College Hawks held on late in the second half to upend the CCNY men's basketball team 76-61, Wednesday evening inside the Nat Holman Gymnasium during CUNYAC conference play.
After trading three lead changes early in the first half, CCNY built a five-point cushion on a
James White three-pointer with 5:25 left in the first half. However, Hunter rallied off 11 straight points in less than five minutes to hold a four-point (39-35) lead at halftime.
The Beavers fought back to bring the game with single-digit points to start the second half. After back-to-back baskets's from
Salvatore Palazzolo (17:05), the Beavers brought the game within one (44-43).
After the Hawks converted a three-pointer with 10:45 left in regulation, taking a seven-point 55-48 lead, the Beavers scored eight unanswered points to take their first lead of the half.
Austin Volkens ignited the run with a floater and a three-pointer to put CCNY up by one (56-55) with under 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
After falling behind, Hunter rallied off a 9-to-2 run in less than five minutes to regain a lead of 64-58.
The Hawks would closeout the game outscoring CCNY 12-to-3 in the final minutes to secure a 76-61 victory.
Austin Volkens paced CCNY with a career-high 20 points and 7 rebounds off the bench.
James White added a new season-high of nine assists, along with 12 points, four rebounds and two steals. Senior
Salvatore Palazzolo poured in 12 points and 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
Looking ahead, the Beaver return to the road with a short trip on Friday to visit John Jay College at 8:00 pm.
