Men's Soccer Takes Down York, 5-3

New York, NY – The CCNY men's soccer team earned its first win of the season Saturday afternoon, taking down York College, 5-3. The Beavers were led by two goals from sophomore Salim Kounaweh and a season-high three assists from freshmen Nicholas Karkut.

Damian Mendoza got things started for the Beavers in the first minute of the game when he netted his first goal of the year, aided by Karkut and Cristian Tenezaca to make it a 1-0 game. 

In the 10th minute, Kounaweh put his second goal of the season into the back of the net off a filter ball inside the box from Edouard Augustin and Jimmy Mendoza to double the Beavers, 2-0.

Karkut added his first goal of the season in the 27th minute of action, assisted by Edgar Gutierrez

Kevin Jusino scored the fourth goal for CCNY and his first of the season in the 35th minute with an assist from Karkut and Axel Guzman.

CCNY entered halftime holding a 4-0 lead, and outshot the Cardinals 10-8

The Cardinals were finally able to breakthrough in the 67th minute when Frank Macapagal headed in the team's first goal of the day.

With 14 minutes remaining, Kounaweh booted in his second goal of the afternoon to give the Beavers a 5-1 advantage. Freshman Paul Centeno and  Karkut were credited with the assist on the play.

With six minutes left in regulations, the Cardinals kept the fight alive, scoring two late back-to-back goals. On two separate corner kick opportunities, Ebrahim Ramos was able to find teammate Rohan Burrell inside the box for two late scores in the 84th and 87th minutes. 

But time would be in the Beavers favor, as CCNY would end York's thoughts of a come from behind win, securing the 5-3 victory.

Goalkeeper Christopher Moreno played a key part in the win for the Beavers, making 11 saves and earned his first win of the season.

CCNY returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 10 with a trip to Brooklyn, NY for a battle against Brooklyn College.  Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
