Throggs Neck, NY - The City College of New York men's basketball team dropped a 91-84 decision at Maritime College in its 2018-19 season opener on Saturday. The Beavers finished with four players scoring in double figures.
The Pravieeters led by as much as 14 points in the first half with under six minutes remaining. CCNY would close out the half on a 20-12 run to bring the game within six points (46-40) at halftime.
Trailing by as many as 11 points in the second half, the Beavers managed to cut Maritime's lead down two points at 64-62 with 10 minutes remaining. However, Maritime would hold onto their lead, narrowly outscoring the Beavers in the final stretch 27-22 to end the game.
Junior
Ty-Ler Banks led CCNY with a double-double of 29 points on 10-of-16 shooting and 13 rebounds. Senior guard
Mike White chipped in 18 points off the bench, hitting 5-of-9 from behind the arc.
Sophomore
Ian Javier scored 12 points, along with five rebounds and one steal. Junior
Romello Rashad led CCNY in assists, dishing out five helpers and poured in 11 points in 35 minutes of action.
Brendan McGovern led the Privateers with 31 points and three rebounds while Brennan Wheelan contributed 16 points.
CCNY controlled a 39-33 rebounding margin, leading to 16 second-chance points. Both teams were tied with 11 turnovers apiece.
The Beavers return to action next weekend with a trip to Montclair, NJ for the 2018 Ollie Gelston Classic hosted by Montclair State University. CCNY will face Moravian College on Friday, Nov. 16 at 7:00 pm and close out the tournament against Montclair State on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 12:00 pm.
