Men's Basketball Defends Home Court against John Jay, 73-66

New York, N.Y. - In front of an energetic crowd at the Nat Holman Gymnasium on Friday night, the CCNY men's basketball program earned an all-around team victory over John Jay College, 73-66, in conference action.

After trailing by 10 points three minutes into the contest (13-3), CCNY put together an 8-0 run to cut John Jay's lead to two points (13-11) with 11:46 left in the first half. With 8:13 to go in the half, the Beavers closed out the half on a 22-2 run, to end the half with a 36-22 lead.

John Jay opened the second half with eight unanswered points, cutting CCNY's lead down to six, 36-30. Four consecutive buckets from junior forward Ty-Ler Banks grew the Lavender & Black's lead to nine points (44-35) with 14:49 remaining. 

John Jay would once again answered back, scoring 10 straight unanswered points, taking their first lead since the first half (45-44).

Both teams would trade four lead changes before a good free from Isaiah Denard knotted the game at 50 apiece with under 10 minutes remaining in the contest.

With the game tied, CCNY hit two back-to-back three-pointers to create a comfortable six-point cushion with 8:07 left. Capitalizing off fouls, CCNY was able to convert on 11 of their final 12 free throws to pull away in the final minutes of the game for their first victory of the season.

Banks led the Beavers with 19 points, 10 rebounds, and three assists for his third double-double of the season. Sophomore Adem Gutic notched his first double-double of the season, ending with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Junior Romello Rashad added 12 points, six rebounds, and four assists, while Denard had 10 points, three rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

Senior Mike White finished with nine points and four assists, followed by Ian Javier with eight points and three steals and Wils Jazilek with five points and three rebounds.

Aiding in the win, the Beavers were to able out-rebound the Bloodhounds 39-30. CCNY also shot 52.1% from the field in the contest, while also tying their season-high assist total with 18.

CCNY will return to the road to face USMMA on Tuesday, Dec. 11. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in Kings Point, N.Y.
