Baseball Drops Doubleheader at Mt. St. Mary

NEWBURGH, NY – The City College of New York baseball team dropped a pair of non-conference games against Mount Saint Mary College on Wednesday, falling in game one, 8-6, and dropping game two, 9-7.

Game 1: MSMC 8, CCNY 6
The Beavers struck first, scoring two runs in the first inning. Junior Rob Mandich plated sophomore Cooper York on an RBI groundout. Senior Anthony Cacchionne followed in the next at-bat with an RBI single to take a 2-0 lead.

After a scoreless second inning, Mount Saint Mary answered back, tallying four runs in the third frame. The Knights capitalized on fours hits and an error to a 4-2 advantage.

In the fifth frame, Mount Saint Mary tacked on four more runs, to extend their lead to 8-2.

CCNY was able to put three runs in the seventh inning. Stephen Peters hit an RBI tripled to right center and scored later on a fielder choice. With two outs and a runner on second and third, Junior Sardar Khanbilvardi doubled to left center for a two-run score, bringing CCNY within two (8-6). as the Knights were able to record the final out.


Game 2: Mt. St. Mary 9, CCNY 7
CCNY notched the first run of the game behind Mandich's' RBI single through in the first inning. 

In the second inning, sophomore Hamely Volquez scored on Benjamin Jacquez III's infield sacrifice fly. Freshman Chris Moreno followed with an RBI double to left center to take a 3-0 lead.

Mount Saint Mary tallied five runs on five hits in the bottom of the second, highlighted by Mirra's two-run double, to take a 5-3 lead.

The Lavender & Black came back with two more in the top of the third, on an RBI single from Cacchione and RBI groundout Volquez, tying the game at five runs apiece.
 
In the next half of the inning, the Knights took the lead, scoring one run on a wild pitch. 

Mount Saint Mary added another run in the fifth frame on an RBI double, to extend their lead to 7-5.

Down two runs heading into the sixth, the Beavers rallied, tying the game again with a pair of runs. Jacquez scored the first run after stealing third and advancing home on a throwing error. Cooper York's batted in the second run, doubling down the right-field line, tying the game at 7-7.

The Knights were able to rally in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two unearned runs on a fielding error. 

Mount Saint Mary held off CCNY in the final inning to escape with a 9-7 victory.

The Beavers are back in action tomorrow, Thursday, Apr. 12 when they travel to Madison, NJ to take on Drew University at 4:00 pm.
