CCNY Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Lehman

NEW YORK, NY - The CCNY Baseball team swept Lehman College in a CUNYAC doubleheader on Saturday. They defeated the Lightning, 8-0, in the opener and held on in game two, 5-4.

The Beavers are now at .500 for the first time this season, holding a 7-7 overall record and 4-1 mark in league play.

Game One: CCNY 8 - Lehman 0
Senior Anthony Cacchione led the scoring off with an RBI walk in the bottom of the first inning, 

In the third inning, Sophomore Stephen Peters led off the third inning with a triple to center field. Two batters later, Cacchione scored Peters on an RBI sacrifice fly ball. 

Cacchione started off the fifth, with a triple to right field. After Junior Sardar Khanbilvadi walked an at-bat later, sophomore Brandon Gianikos batted in Cacchione on an RBI bunt single to take a 
4-0 lead. Two at-bats later the Lavender & Black picked up two more runs on Junior Eric Giglio two-RBI single through the left side.

In the sixth inning, Cacchione got on base by a walk and later stole second. In his second appearance at the plate, Khanbilvadi blasted a two-RBI homer to left field for the teams seventh and eighth runs of the game.

Junior Cal Romano was masterful on the mound, completing his first shutout of the season. He threw seven scoreless innings allowing no runs, recording four strikeouts and surrendering just four hits.

Game Two: CCNY 5 - Lehman 4
The Beavers got out ahead early, securing three runs in the first inning. Sophomore Cooper York led the game off with a single through the right side and Peters followed with a base hit. After stealing third, York was able to score the first run after a throwing error. Cacchione hit a double up the middle an at-bat later, to plate Peters. Gianikos earn the RBI for the third run with a base hit single.

Lehman scored a run in the third after three hits in the inning.

In the bottom of the third, Peters led off with a double to right field. Senior Anthony Sautter recorded a base hit for an RBI single. Freshman Benjamin Jacquez III brought Sautter home on an RBI double to right field to extend the Beaver lead to 5-1. 

In the sixth, the Lightning earned three runs on three hits and two errors to bring the game within one heading into the final inning.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Danny Betances closed out the game on the mound in the seventh inning. Betances struck out two batters, letting up only one hit and walking one runner to earn his first save of the season.

The Beavers will return to action on Tuesday, April 3, against NYU at 4:00 pm at MCU Park in Brooklyn, NY
