Men’s Volleyball Takes Down Newbury on the Road, 3-0

Brookline, Mass. - The City College of New York men's volleyball team defeated Newbury College on the road on Tuesday in three sets (25-16, 25-11, 25-17). The Beavers improve to 2-0 on the year with the win, while the Nighthawks drop to 0-1 to start the season.

In the opening set, the Beavers hit .318 with 11 total team kills and used a 7-0 scoring run in the middle of the set to win the first, 25-16. Freshman Xhulio Myftari had five of the 11 overall kills.

In the second, CCNY hit a match-best .583 including 15 overall kills to win the second set, 25-11. The Nighthawks were able to hit .200 from the floor, but couldn't produce enough offense to hold up to the Beavers.

In the final set, CCNY again hit an impressive .379 with 14 kills to sweep the Nighthawks, 25-17, in straight sets. Tied at 10-10, CCNY used a 9-4 scoring run to create the distance necessary for the win.

Myftari led the Beavers with 16 kills while hitting .483 from the floor, along with three aces and four total blocks.  Junior Carlos Maldonado Madrid ended with 10 kills,  five digs, two aces, and one block.

Sophomore Hei Chun Chan dished out 32 assists, while sophomore Javier Lazo picked up seven kills and seven digs.

The Beavers return to action next on Wednesday, Jan. 30, when they host Wilkes University at the Nat Holman Gymnasium for a 7:00 pm tip-off.
