BROOKLYN, NY -- On Saturday afternoon, the City College of New York took part in its second CUNY Athletic Conference tri-match of the season at Brooklyn College's West Quad Gym. After dropping a 23-25, 25-22, 25-21, 21-18 decision to the host Bulldogs (11-7, 4-1 CUNYAC), CCNY (5-6, 2-3 CUNYAC) rebounded to post a dominant 25-14, 25-9, 25-12 victory over York (5-7, 1-3 CUNYAC) in its second match of the day.
CCNY opened the tri-match against Brooklyn. The Bulldogs raced out to a 7-3 lead in the first set, but the Beavers responded with a 10-4 spurt to go up 13-11. After the teams traded two-point runs, putting CCNY in front 15-13, Brooklyn again responded, taking a 20-19 lead on a kill by Ashley Fung. Oanh Han (Brooklyn, NY) service ace started a 4-1 run that brought CCNY to set point. A kill by
Dzeneta Harambasic (Ridgewood, NY) finished off the frame, 25-23.
In the second set, Brooklyn took control early. The Bulldogs jumped out to an 11-5 lead before the Beavers scored eight of the next 12 points to pull within two, 15-13. A
Kayla Oge (New City, NY) ace trimmed CCNY's deficit to one at 19-18, but Brooklyn won the next point to regain a two-point edge. The Bulldogs captured the set by a 25-22 count to even the match.
There were 11 ties and four lead changes in a tightly-contested third set. Brooklyn pulled ahead 8-5, then CCNY used a 9-4 spurt to go in front 14-12. The Bulldogs responded with an 8-4 run to build a 20-16 cushion, but the Beavers claimed the next three points to again make it a one-point margin, 20-19. Brooklyn won three of the next four points, though, and claimed the set, 25-21, to take the 2-1 edge in the match.
The Beavers opened up a 6-5 advantage early in the fourth set before Brooklyn rattled off 17 of the next 20 points. With the Bulldogs leading 22-9, Oge smacked a kill to start a 5-0 CCNY run that prompted a Brooklyn timeout. Despite ending the match on a 9-3 run, the margin was simply too much to overcome. CCNY dropped the fourth set, 25-18, sealing the 3-1 win for the Bulldogs.
Nicole Polanco (West Haverstraw, NY) had a double-double for the Beavers, finishing with 14 kills and 12 digs. Oge added 10 kills and four blocks, while Harambasic contributed 38 assists and 13 digs.
Rachel Ramirez (New York, NY) and
Michelle Hu (Staten Island, NY) paced CCNY with 16 digs apiece, and Han tallied 15 digs, as the Beavers outdug the Bulldogs 83-75. As a team, CCNY hit .121 (43 kills, 25 errors, 149 attempts) in the match.
For Brooklyn, Fung led the way with 16 kills to go along with nine dige and five service aces. Madison Cronk registered 11 kills, while Ezri Shor posted a double-double with 40 assists and 10 digs. She also served three aces.
Yana Shaposhnikova had three aces while adding a match-high 19 digs. Alejandra Chen, meanwhile, contribute eight kills and 12 digs. The Bulldogs hit .127 (43-23-157) as a team.
Against York, CCNY was in control from the start. The Cardinals built an early 3-1 lead in the first set before the Beavers responded with four straight to go up 5-3. A pair of Oge aces (her third and fourth of the frame) capped a 22-5 rally and extened the cushion to 23-10. Overall, CCNY had nine aces in the 25-14 set win.
York again took a 3-1 lead in the second set. However, CCNY countered with four of the next five points to go ahead 5-4. The Beavers' run eventually reached 23-5, giving them a set point opportunity. Oge ripped a kill to close out the frame, 25-9.
That offensive dominance carried over into the third set, as CCNY raced out to a 7-1 advantage. York pulled within three at 12-9, but Oge followed with a kill, then served back-to-back aces that made it 16-10. After three consecutive Polanco aces, Harambasic pounded two straight kills to end it. The Beavers captured the set, 25-12, to finish off the sweep and fourth win in their last five matches.
It was a balanced effort for CCNY, as four players served at least three aces and four slammed three or more kills. Polanco ended up with seven kills and five aces to go along with 13 digs, while Harambasic had 18 assists, five kills and four aces. Oge, meanwhile, notched eight aces and six kills. Han tallied 16 digs and three aces, and Hu contributed 10 digs. As a team, the Beavers served 20 aces and outdug the Cardinals 50-34. CCNY also hit a combined .143 (26-15-77).
Chrissy Hobson paced York with three kills and three blocks. Dorianny Rojas, meanwhile, recorded 11 digs for the Cardinals. York was held to -.110 (7-15-73) hitting as a team.
After playing their first 11 matches away from home, the Beavers take the court at Nat Holman Gymnasium for the first time on Tuesday night. CCNY hosts Sarah Lawrence (11-10) at 7 p.m., and there will be a special ceremony unveiling the new floor prior to the contest. It will also be the Beavers' Breast Cancer Awareness Match.
