NEW YORK -- Needing a win and some help to qualify for the CUNY Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday afternoon, the City College of New York men's soccer team got exactly that. The Beavers (3-11-0, 3-4-0 CUNYAC) earned 3-2 victory over Baruch (6-8-1, 4-3-0 CUNYAC) at Randall's Island Field 10, which, coupled with York's 2-1 overtime loss to Hunter clinched the sixth and final playoff spot.
CCNY had a great early scoring chance when
Alan Tsigalnitsky's (St. Petersburg, Russia) fourth-minute blast was stopped by Baruch goalkeeper Elliot Breslav. The Beavers then got on the board in the 31st minute.
Delano Darko (Accra, Ghana) sent a pass into the middle of the box, and
Nicholas Karkut (Tychy, Poland) put it home for his second goal of the season.
In the 55th minute, CCNY doubled its lead when
Adonijah Brooks (St. Vincent & the Grenadines) connected with
Erik Jimenez (Comayaua, Honduras), who was streaking down the left side. Jimenez knocked a low shot into the right corner of the net for his team-leading third goal of the year.
Bubaccar Jaiteh (Bakau, Gambia) then made it 3-0 eight minutes later of Darko's second assist of the game.
Just over a minute later, Baruch responded with a goal by Cormac Foley. The Bearcats pulled within 3-2 on a Ricardo Llanos tally in the 78th minute and had a great opportunity to tie the game in the final minute. However,
Kacper Lesniak (Nowy Sacz, Poland) stopped Shane Rafferty's attempt and the Beavers earned the victory, their first over Baruch since 2016.
Lesniak ended up with four saves in the contest. Breslav, meanwhile, stopped a pair of CCNY shots.
The Beavers and Bearcats will meet again next Wednesday in the first round of the CUNYAC Tournament. It will be CCNY's first postseason appearance in three seasons.
