NEW YORK -- The City College of New York men's soccer team (2-9-0, 2-3-0 CUNYAC) dropped a 2-1 decision to CUNY Athletic Conference rival Brooklyn (2-10-0, 2-2-0 CUNYAC) at Randall's Island Field 10 on Wednesday night. The loss snapped CCNY's two-game winning streak.
It was the Beavers' Breast Cancer Awareness Game. The team work pink socks and warmup shirts, and honored friends and family members who've been affected by the disease during pregame introductions.
Once the game began, Brooklyn struck first. The Bulldogs earned a penalty kick in the 10th minute, which Alex Sosa converted to put his team in front. Brooklyn nearly made it 2-0 in the 30th minute, but the CCNY defense cleared it off the line to preserve the one-goal deficit. The Beavers were credited with another team save in the 44th minute, keeping the game at 1-0 going into the halftime break.
Early in the second half, it was CCNY that earned the penalty kick opportunity after a Brooklyn foul in the box.
John Yauri (Cuenca, Ecuador) stepped up and put it into the back of the net to even the score at 1-1. After Brooklyn regained the lead on George Espinoza's goal in the 75th minute, the Beavers applied consistent offensive pressure over the final 15 minutes. CCNY was unable to find the back of the net, however, and the Bulldogs held on for the 2-1 victory.
Yauri's goal, his second of the season, kept the Beavers perfect on penalty kicks (3-for-3) this year.
Kacper Lesniak (Nowy Sacz, Poland) tallied six saves in the loss. Brooklyn goalkeeper Lorenzo Davies, meanwhile, posted three saves.
CCNY returns to Randall's Island Field 10 on Saturday afternoon, when it takes on Hunter (3-7-1, 2-1-0 CUNYAC) at 1:30 p.m.
