GALLOWAY, NJ -- The City College of New York women's basketball team held a one-point lead after three quarters at Stockton on Saturday afternoon. However, the host Ospreys (2-0) used a big fourth quarter to pull away for a 79-53 victory over the Beavers (0-2) at The Sports Center in the opening game of the Stockton Tip-Off Tournament.
It was tied at 6-6 three minutes in when
Reilly Boehm (Orlando, FL) sank a trey and
Melanie Torres (Queens, NY) added a layup to give CCNY a five-point lead. The lead reached six points when a Torres layup made it 15-9 late in the first quarter, and the Beavers held a 15-10 advantage after 10 minutes.
After Stockton tied the score at 17-17 with 6:59 left until halftime, a Boehm three-pointer and a
Shaynah Lander (Mount Vernon, NY) free throw put CCNY back up four, 21-17, at the 6:07 mark. However, the Ospreys responded with a 13-3 run to take a 30-24 lead with 2:25 remaining in the half, and it was a 30-26 game at the break.
A Kiley Gelston layup to open the second half increased Stockton's cushion to 32-26 before CCNY rattled off nine of the next 10 points to regain the lead, 35-33. There were five ties over the final 3:28 of the third quarter, as neither side held an advantage of more than two points. Boehm sank a pair of free throws with 15 sconds left to put the Beavers up 45-43.
Ionyonia Alves hit a foul shot on the other end to bring Stockton within one, 45-44, at the end of the third quarter. The Ospreys then outscored CCNY 35-8 in the fourth quarter to post a 79-53 win.
Boehm paced the Beavers with 25 points. She added five rebounds and three assists.
Tianna Fumasoli (Elizaville, NY) finished with 14 points, while Torres just missed a double-double with eight points and a game-high 16 boards.
Harlean Williams (Staten Island, NY) grabbed 10 rebounds, and
Nahomi Zambrano (Bronx, NY) handed out three assists. CCNY shot 28.3 percent (15-of-53) from the field, 29.4 percent (5-of-17) from three-point range, and 69.2 percent (18-of-26) at the free throw line.
For the Ospreys, Gelston led the way with 15 points. Chyna Wooten and Raquel Harris-Scott each had a double-double. Wooten finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Harris-Scott tallied 10 points and 11 boards. Brittina Bulli added eight rebounds, as Stockton held a 56-48 edge on the glass. The Ospreys went 31-for-85 (36.5 percent) from the floor, 3-for-12 (25 percent) from downtown, and 14-for-32 (43.8 percent) at the charity stripe.
On Sunday, the Beavers will face Pitt Greensburg (1-1) in the consolation game, which gets underway at 1 p.m.
