BRONX, NY -- For the first time in seven years, the City College of New York women's soccer team is headed to the CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Championship Game!
Cassidy Canberg (Remsenburg, NY) scored twice and
Tatiana Zuluaga (Levittown, NY) added a goal, as the third-seeded Beavers (7-8-0) notched a 3-1 victory over second-seeded Lehman (4-11-0) in the semifinals at Fordham University's Jack Coffey Field on Saturday afternoon.
"It's a great feeling," Head Coach
Louis Manoussos said. "The last time we were there was 2012, so it's been a long time coming. We're very excited for the opportunity."
Canberg gave CCNY a 1-0 lead after just eight minutes, as her beautiful strike from just outside the box banged off the right post and in. The Beavers kept the pressure on and doubled the margin in the 16th minute. The ball was being volleyed around inside the box and eventually found the foot of Zuluaga. She corralled it and deposited a shot into the left corner for a 2-0 advantage.
CCNY nearly added a third, but had a pair of attempts sail just high. Lehman then made it 2-1 when Melanie Huerta scored off a free kick late in the first half.
After several close near-misses, including one that was played off the goal line by the Lehman defense and another that hit the crossbar, CCNY picked up an insurance tally in the 80th minute. Canberg played a cross from 25 yards out that bent to the right and into the net for a 3-1 advantage that would prove to be the final margin.
"That was pretty nerve-wracking (after Lehman scored)," Canberg said. "We just needed that little bit of support with that late goal."
The two goals now give Canberg nine on the season. Zuluaga's tally, meanwhile, was her second of the year.
Gabrielle Duchaussee (Saratoga Springs, NY) was credited with an assist on the game-winner, while goalkeeper
Catherine Langkamp (Bronx, NY) made two saves in the victory.
Micaela Canapa assisted on Huerta's team-leading sixth goal of the season for the Lightning. Lehman goalkeeper Rebecca Gritz registered seven saves.
With the win, CCNY snapped its five-game losing streak in CUNYAC semifinals and moved on to the championship round for the first time since 2012. The Beavers will face top-seeded John Jay (11-6-1) with an NCAA Tournament berth at stake next Saturday at 2 p.m. from Brooklyn College Field.
