NEW YORK -- The City College of New York women's basketball team played its first home game of the season on Wednesday night.
Reilly Boehm (Orlando, FL) and
Tianna Fumasoli (Elizaville, NY) combined to score 45 points, but the Beavers (0-3) ultimately fell to St. Joseph's Long Island (1-2) by a 79-54 count at Nat Holman Gymnasium.
Boehm finished with 26 points, giving her 101 in the Beavers' first four games. She also pulled down six rebounds. Fumasoli had 19 points, 16 of which came in the third quarter.
Harlean Williams (Staten Island, NY) grabbed nine rebounds, and
Melanie Torres (Queens, NY) registered seven boards to go along with two blocks. CCNY shot 25 percent (17-of-68) from the field, 22.7 percent (5-of-22) from long range, and 75 percent (15-of-20) at the charity stripe.
For the Golden Eagles, Cathernie Siounis recorded a double-double with 16 points and 24 rebounds. Alyssa Signor tallied 19 points and seven boards, while Emma Lange finished with 18 points. Margaret Kopcienski contributed 13 points and four assists for St. Joseph's, which shot 40.3 percent (31-of-77) from the floor. The Golden Eagles went 5-for-19 (26.3 percent) from downtown and 12-for-21 (57.1 percent) at the free throw line.
St. Joseph's scored the first seven points of the game and led 23-10 at the end of the first quarter. The Beavers trimmed their deficit to five when a Fumasoli layup made it 25-20 with 6:03 left until halftime. However, the Golden Eagles responded with a 13-3 run to push the margin back to 15 points, 38-23, with 1:25 remaining in the half. Five CCNY free throws closed the period, and the sides went into the locker room with St. Joseph's holding a 38-28 advantage.
After the Golden Eagles started the third quarter with a pair of layups, Boehm sank two free throws and Fumasoli nailed a trey to bring CCNY within nine, 42-33. Fumasoli scored 16 of the Beavers' 22 points in the period, including 11 in a row. It was a 59-50 game entering the fourth quarter, but St. Joseph's pulled away over the final 10 minutes for a 79-54 victory.
On Saturday, the Beavers will host Albright (4-0) at 2 p.m. The contest will be the opener of a doubleheader with the CCNY men's team, and there will be a special ceremony honoring Wounded Warriors between games.
