NEW LONDON, CT -- The City College of New York men's basketball team rallied from 17 points down in the second half to force overtime at Connecticut College on Tuesday night. However, Jeff Allen sank a three-pointer just before time expired in the extra period to give the Camels (2-3) an 83-81 victory over the Beavers (0-5) at Luce Field House.
Connecticut College led 38-31 at halftime and extended its advantage to 74-57 on a Jack Zimmerman jumper with 4:23 remaining.
Romello Rashad (New York, NY) hit a pair of free throws on the other end, though, to begin the CCNY comeback. The Beavers scored the final 17 points of regulation, with Rashad's trey at the 11-second mark tying the game at 74-74. Connecticut College had one last chance to win the game in regulation, but Allen's jumper was off the mark and the contest went into overtime.
A Dan Draffan layup opened the scoring in the extra session before
Isaiah Denard (Staten Island, NY) sank two foul shots and Rashad added a layup to give CCNY the lead, 78-76. The Beavers then extended their lead to three points, 81-78, when Denard hit two more free throws with 1:38 left.
After a Draffan layup made it a one-point game, 81-80, with 31 seconds remaining, Connecticut College opted to play defense on the ensuing CCNY possession. Denard got a good look at a jumper, but it was off the mark and the Camels grabbed the rebound. With just over a second remaining, Allen nailed a trey from the right arc to give Connecticut College the lead. That would prove to be the difference, as Rashad's trey at the buzzer didn't fall and the Camels held on for the 83-81 win.
Rashad had 21 points to go along with five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Denard finished with 19 points and five boards, while
Yassine Sakhi (New York, NY) contributed 17 points and five rebounds.
Isaiah Williams (Bronx, NY) tallied 14 points and five assists, and
Daniel Piszczatowski (Middle Village, NY) grabbed a team-best six boards. The Beavers shot 38.9 percent (28-of-72) from the field, 33.3 percent (10-of-33) from downtown, and 83.3 percent (15-of-18) at the free throw line.
In the first half, Connecticut College opened up a 21-16 advantage before
Athanasios Kamberis (New Hyde Park, NY) drained a trey to spark a 9-0 CCNY run that gave the Beavers a 25-21 lead. The Camels scored the next five points to go back in front, but Williams immediately countered with a jumper. Connecticut College would end the period on a 12-5 spurt, though, and took a six-point cushion, 37-31, into the locker room.
For the Camels, McPherron led the way with 21 points. He also pulled down seven rebounds. Draffan recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Patrick Lazor added 12 points. Zimmerman handed out a game-high eigh assists, while Allen finished with seven points, six rebounds and four blocks. Connecticut College shot 52.5 percent (31-of-59) from the floor, including 36.4 percent (8-of-22) from long range, and 76.5 percent (13-of-17) at the charity stripe.
CCNY returns to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. visit to St. Joseph's Brooklyn (3-1).
