NEW YORK -- In its final match of the regular season, the City College of New York women's volleyball team (11-8) registered a 25-6, 25-12, 25-19 triumph over Yeshiva (0-19) at ARC Arena on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, the Beavers guaranteed themselves a winning record for the first time since 2010.
CCNY scored the first seven points of the match and quickly extended that lead to 10-1. After the Maccabees pulled within 11-5, a
Nicole Polanco (West Haverstraw, NY) kill started a set-ending 14-1 run for the Beavers. CCNY hit a combined .529 (10 kills, one error, 17 attempts) in the 25-6 opening-set win.
It was more of the same in the second set, as the Beavers raced out to a 5-1 advantage and extended their cushion to 11-4 on an
Oanh Han (Brooklyn, NY) service ace. Yeshiva pulled within 13-6, but CCNY closed out the set by taking 12 of the final 18 points to earn a 25-12 win and go up 2-0 in the match.
Yeshiva built the early advantage in the third set, going up 5-1 before the Beavers rallied to tie the score at 12-12. CCNY eventually pulled ahead, 15-13, on a
Kayla Oge (New City, NY) ace, but the Maccabees responded with a 4-1 spurt to regain the lead, 17-16. The Beavers won the next point to tie the score, then got back-to-back aces from Polanco to start a 9-2 rally. Oge pounded a kill to end it, as CCNY took the third set, 25-19, and swept the contest, 3-0.
Polanco paced the Beavers with 13 kills, while Oge had a kill on all eight of her attack attempts. CCCNY finished with 21 total aces, as
Rachel Ramirez (New York, NY) served six aces and
Michelle Hu (Staten Island, NY) added four aces.
Dzeneta Harambasic (Ridgewood, NY), meanwhile, distributed 25 assists to go along with four aces. As a team, the Beavers hit .231 (30-15-65) in the match.
Tehilla Teigman led the Maccabees with six kills. Bayta Schreier tallied four kills, while Brooke Ratner recorded a match-high six digs. Julia Chase added five digs for Yeshiva, which hit .047 (12-10-43) as a team.
On Tuesday, the Beavers will host John Jay (6-16) at 7 p.m. in the first round of the CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Tournament. CCNY earned a 3-1 win over the Bloodhounds when the squads met on Sept. 14.
