NEW LONDON, CT – The City College of New York men's basketball team took the court for the final time in 2019 on Tuesday night. It was a six-point game at halftime, but the short-handed Beavers (0-10) ultimately fell to host Mitchell (2-6) by an 85-58 margin at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
There were five ties and eight lead changes early on. Mitchell built a 13-7 advantage 3:35 into the contest, but CCNY responded with a 9-0 run to go ahead 16-13. After the Mariners opened up a 29-22 cushion with 7:15 left until halftime, a three-pointer by
Romello Rashad (New York, NY) sparked a 13-6 Beaver rally that evened the score at 35-35 with 2:36 remaining in the first half.
However, Mitchell ended the half with a 6-0 spurt to take a 41-35 lead into the locker room. The Mariners gradually extended that margin throughout the second half en route to an 85-58 triumph.
Rashad
paced the Beavers with 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Daniel Piszczatowski (Middle Village, NY) had 16 points for the second consecutive game, while
Yassine Sakhi (New York, NY) finished with 11 points and five boards.
Austin Volkens (Brooklyn, NY) made his first start of the season and posted nine points to go along with six rebounds.
Torrel Trim (Springfield Gardens, NY), meanwhile, distributed four assists. CCNY shot 42.4 percent (25-of-59) from the floor, 15.4 percent (2-of-13) from long range, and 60 percent (6-of-10) at the charity stripe.
For the Mariners, Hasani Williams had a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Matt Finke tallied 14 points and eight boards, while Jalen Benson registered 14 points and four assists. Dra Harrison posted 13 points and eight rebounds, and Brendan Miller handed out five of Mitchell's 22 assists. The Mariners went 33-for-70 (47.1 percent) from the field, 9-for-21 (42.9 percent) from three-point land, and 10-for-12 (83.3 percent) at the free throw line.
After playing four games in eight days, the Beavers will now have more than three weeks off before returning to action. CCNY (0-1 CUNYAC) resumes its CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) schedule by welcoming Baruch (5-2, 1-0 CUNYAC) to Nat Holman Gymnasium at 2 p.m. on Jan. 4.
