STATEN ISLAND, NY – On Tuesday, the City College of New York women's basketball team took on Staten Island at the Sports & Recreation Center. The game was tied at 14-14 after the first quarter, but the Dolphins (1-6) eventually pulled away for a 96-51 victory over the Beavers (0-7). Since Staten Island is transitioning to the Division II level, the matchup was considered a non-conference affair.
Staten Island had a 6-5 lead when
Harlean Williams (Staten Island, NY) hit a layup to put the Beavers in front midway through the first quarter.
Nahomi Zambrano (Bronx, NY) followed with a layup, then
Tianna Fumasoli (Elizaville, NY) added a trey and
Reilly Boehm (Orlando, FL) sank a layup to give CCNY a 14-6 advantage with 3:25 left in the period. The Dolphins ended the quarter on an 8-0 run, though, sending the contest into the second frame deadlocked at 14-14.
After a pair of Boehm free throws made it 18-18 with 7:33 remaining in the second quarter, Staten Island ended the half on a 15-6 spurt to take a 33-24 advantage into the locker room. The Dolphins then extended that margin to 62-32 after three quarters. Staten Island gradually increased its advantage throughout the fourth quarter, and a traditional three-point play by Tori Moylan with 15 seconds left capped the scoring in the Dolphins' 96-51 win.
