NEW YORK – Reilly Boehm (Orlando, FL) scored 30 points for the second time this season and
Tianna Fumasoli (Elizaville, NY) posted her first career double-double, as the City College of New York women's basketball team tallied a season-high 68 points on Friday. However, the Beavers (0-8, 0-1 CUNYAC) dropped a 111-68 decision to John Jay (4-5, 2-0 CUNYAC) in their CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) opener at Nat Holman Gymnasium.
Each team shot over 50 percent from the field in a high-scoring first quarter. CCNY jumped out to an early 6-2 lead before John Jay scored six straight points to pull ahead, 8-6. Boehm immediately responded with a layup to tie the score, one of five deadlocks in the opening 10 minutes. After a Fumasoli jumper made it 19-19 with two minutes left in the period, the Bloodhounds went on a 6-0 run to regain a 25-19 edge. John Jay had a five-point cushion, 33-28, at the end of the quarter.
The Bloodhounds scored the first 10 points of the second quarter to extend the margin to 43-28, and it was a 66-40 game at intermission. After John Jay increased its advantage to 80-49 with 2:34 remaining in the third quarter, CCNY went on a 10-4 spurt to pull within 84-59. However, the Bloodhounds outscored the Beavers 27-9 in the fourth quarter to hand CCNY a 111-68 defeat.
Boehm distributed five assists to go along with her 30 points. Fumasoli, meanwhile, finished with 23 points and a career-best 10 rebounds.
Melanie Torres (Queens, NY) contributed six points and nine boards for the Beavers, who shot 40.3 percent (25-of-62) from the field. CCNY was 7-for-21 (33.3 percent) from three-point land and 11-for-13 (84.6 percent) at the free throw line.
For the Bloodhounds, Nyasha Howard recorded a triple-double with 28 points, 13 rebounds and 13 assists. Katie Healy had a double-double with 35 points and 16 rebounds, and she added seven steals. Lily Rakitzis finished with 17 points, four assists and four steals, while Kameron De Voogd added 10 points. John Jay shot 44.3 percent (43-of-97) from the floor, 25 percent (5-of-20) from downtown, and 71.4 percent (20-of-28) at the charity stripe.
On Monday night, the Beavers resume their non-conference slate with a 7 p.m. matchup at New Jersey City (1-4).
