Bronx, NY – The City College of New York women's basketball team toppled the No. 5 seeded John Jay College Bloodhounds on Saturday in the CUNY Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals, 86-63.
The victory advances the program to the conference semifinals for the third time in the last four seasons.
"We are so grateful to be back in the semifinals of our conference tournament. We have improved quite a bit over the past few weeks and are currently playing our best basketball of the season," said Head Coach -
Jamie Angeli. "We know we have a tremendous task trying to upset No. 1 seeded Hunter College on their floor, but I believe our players are ready for the challenge."
In the opening quarter, CCNY struggled to find their groove on the offensive end, going 3-for-14 (21.4%) in the quarter. Defensively, the Beavers limited John Jay to just 13.3% shooting, holding a one-point lead to end the period, 9-8.
The second quarter tempo was controlled by the Lavender & Black. CCNY outscored the Bloodhounds 23-15 in the frame, shooting 58.8% (10-for-17) in the period. At the end of the first half, CCNY held a slight nine-point edge over John Jay, 32-23.
In the third quarter, the Beavers came out blazing, starting the quarter off on an 18-3 run to take a 22-point lead midway through the frame, 50-28. With 2:11 left in the quarter, Sophomore
Madison LaSalle gave the Beavers their largest lead of the game, after burying a three-pointer to put the team up by 33-points, 63-30.
CCNY outrebounded John Jay 51-37 and outscored the Bloodhounds 48-to-22 in the paint. The Beavers had their most efficient game of the year, shooting a season-high 49.3% from the field.

Ashley Brooks led the attack, scoring a season-high 29 points and grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds for her 13
th double-double of the season. Sophomore
Crystal Blair played a stellar game, finishing with 20 points on 8-for-9 shooting and pulled down 12 rebounds.
Senior
Debra Chan added eight points, seven rebounds, and seven assists in the victory, while LaSalle posted 11 points. Senior
Anielle Fredman notched five points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Freshman
Imani Butts tallied five points and two assists, while
Elizabeth Zullo ended with four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
CCNY will take on the No.1 seeded Hunter College on Tuesday in the CUNYAC Tournament semifinals. The game will be held at Hunter, tipping off at 6:00 p.m.
