CCNY Baseball Falls to Purchase In Season-Opener

Purchase, NY – The City College of New York baseball team fell in their 2019 season opener against the Purchase College Panthers, 4-0, on Saturday.

After five scoreless innings, the Panthers struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Matthew Nilsen batted in Matthew Villalobos for the first score of the day. Two batters later, Patrick Wallace reached home on a fielder's choice RBI.

In the seventh, the Purchase added their third run as Dylan Flynn came home after stealing third and advancing on an error. The team's final score came in the ninth frame after Brian Cunningham drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Tighe Jorgensen.

For the Lavender & Black, junior Stephen Peters, senior Rob Mandich, junior Hamley Volquez, and sophomore Michael Espinal each tallied a hit for the Beavers. 

On the mound, senior Cal Romano started the first six innings with two strikeouts while freshman Peter Komaroski struck out two batters in 2.0 innings of work and sophomore Trent Alfred threw the final inning, totaling two strikeouts.

The Beavers are back in action against Mount Saint Mary College on Friday, March 1 at 3:00 p.m. at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, NY.
