West Harrison, NY - The CCNY baseball program earned a two-game sweep of Yeshiva University on Friday afternoon on the road at Silver Lake Park in West Harrison, New York.
Game 1: CCNY 5, Yeshiva 0
Junior
Stephen Peters led off the fourth inning with a base hit through the right side followed with a steal of second. four batters later, junior
Hamley Volquez singled through the left side to put the Beavers ahead 1-0.
An inning later, Peters added the team's second run, batting in classmate
Cooper York from second on a single through the left side. Later in the inning, sophomore
Michael Espinal notched an RBI single, scoring Peters.
The Beavers scored their two final runs in the seventh inning. Freshman
Josh Moreno singled up the middle to scored Peters for his third run of the day, while Volquez plated Espinal on an RBI single.
Senior
Cal Romano started his third game on the mound, throwing seven complete innings. He pitched his second career shutout, striking out five batters and scratching two hits across the game.
Game 2: CCNY 6, Yeshiva 1
With three runners on base in the top of the first inning, Espinal brought in the first run on an RBI sacrifice fly ball.
In the third inning, Espinal picked up his second RBI of the game with a triple to right field to plate
Rob Mandich and reached home on a throwing error to help put the Beavers up 3-0.
Yeshiva got their first run of the day in the bottom of the fifth, as Alex Malech scored on a wild pitch to cut CCNY lead to two runs (3-1).
In the next inning, sophomore
Edgar Rodriguez kept the Maccabees from producing any runs, retiring all three Yeshiva batters.
CCNY extended its lead in the seventh. With bases loaded Espinal drew an RBI walk, scoring
Sean Riera on an unearned run.
Josh Moreno followed with a single RBI, driving in York and Volquez drove in the third run of the frame on an RBI single.
Volquez led the Beavers with a pair of hits, an RBI, and two walks. Espinal finished with three RBI, one hit, and one run scored.
Freshman
Alex Velazquez earned the win in 5.0 innings of work with three strikeouts and allowing one run. Rodriguez threw 1.1, striking out three batters.
The team is back in action on Saturday, Mar. 23 in Augusta, NJ for a doubleheader against Centenary University.
