CCNY Topples New Rochelle on the Road, 7-1

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The CCNY baseball team returned to the diamond on Tuesday night, earning a non-conference victory over the College of New Rochelle, 7-1, improving to 8-14 on the season.

With two outs in the top of the first, junior Stephen Peters launched a solo home run to center field to make it a 1-0 game.

In the second inning, the Beavers added on two more runs. Junior Hamley Volquez led the inning off with a double to left field and later advanced to third on a passed ball before rookie Alex Velazquez drove him in for the Beavers second score. Freshman Ethan Angress then reached home on Elbin Madera's RBI groundout to push CCNY's lead to 3-0.

In the third, senior Rob Mandich hit a one-out single to left center, scoring Peters for the Lavender & Black's fourth unanswered run. 

With one out in the top of the seventh, Mandich triple to left field, bringing in Cooper York.

The Beavers scored their final two runs in the ninth inning. After York reached first on an error, Peters plated York on an RBI triple to right center. Peter tallied the final run of the evening on a wild pitch.

Offensively, Peters finished with two hits, two RBI, two stolen bases, and four runs scored while Mandich finished with a pair of hits and two RBI. CCNY used eight hits and took advantage of five errors from New Rochelle.

Senior Cal Romano earned the win, logging two innings of work. freshman Peter Komaroski, sophomore Trent Alfred, freshman Alex Velazquez all saw action, relieving for two innings apiece while Christian Barletta closed the game in the ninth. The unit allowed only five hits, struck out four batters, and allowed one run.

The program is back in action tomorrow evening with a non-conference game at Maritime College.
