NEW YORK, NY - The City College of New York men's volleyball program closed out the regular season with a four-set win over the John Jay College on Tuesday evening at the Nat Holman Gymnasium.
The Beavers now conclude the regular season with an 11-match winning streak and a 15-3 (6-1 CUNYAC) record, entering the postseason with the No. 2 seed in next week's CUNYAC Championship Tournament.
Prior to the game, head coach
Andrijana Todorovic and CCNY athletics department held its annual senior night ceremony honor graduating senior
Seth Diaz. Diaz will be graduating in June with a degree in Biology.
Freshman
Xhulio Myftari posted a match-high 24 kills, along with four blocks and three aces. Sophomore
Carlos Maldonado Madrid recorded his second double-double of the season, tallying 11 kills and a season-high 18 digs.
Sophomore
Hei Chun Chan tallied a match-high 40 assists, while
Abdullah Khalid added six kills and two blocks.
Junior
Jonathan Liao collected eight digs while sophomore
Javier Lazo had six.
Three Beavers posted three or more kills in the first set, with 11 total. CCNY ended the frame on a 6-2 run, winning the set 25-20.
In the second set, the Lavender & Black came out on top again, 25-16, registering a match-high 14 kills, hitting .379 as a team in the set.
The Bloodhounds took the third set 25-23. Tied up 21-21, a kill from Alejandro Gallardo and an attacking error on the Beavers gave John Jay a 23-21 advantage and led to them taking the set 25-23.
The fourth set was the closest of the night with the Beavers coming out on top 26-24. All tied up at 23-23, the Bloodhounds went up one on a setting error. Trailing at 24-23, Myftari tied the set for the Beavers with his sixth kill of the frame. CCNY closed out the frame on a 2-0 run to register the win.
Up next, the Beavers advance to the CUNYAC semifinals, facing off with the winner of the quarterfinals contest between No. 3 Baruch College and No. 6 Brooklyn College. The semifinals and finals will be held on Friday, April 12 at Hunter College.
