NEW YORK – The City College of New York women's basketball team returned to action for the first time in a week with a visit to defending CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) champion Hunter on Wednesday. The short-handed Beavers were unable to overcome Hunter's hot start, however, as the Hawks (9-6, 5-1 CUNYAC) notched a 108-42 victory over CCNY (1-14, 1-4 CUNYAC) at the Hunter Sportsplex.
Hunter jumped out to a 31-8 lead after one quarter and extended its cushion to 64-18 at halftime.
Reilly Boehm (Orlando, FL) scored all 13 of CCNY's points in the third quarter, as the Hawks increased their advantage to 83-31. With a 108-42 triumph, Hunter earned its sixth straight win over the Beavers, including a victory in last year's CUNYAC semifinals.
Boehm
had her first career double-double, grabbing a career-best 11 rebounds to go along with her 22 points.
Shanyah Lander (Mount Vernon, NY), meanwhile, posted career-highs with eight points and six boards.
Melanie Torres (Queens, NY) contributed five points and four rebounds for the Beavers, who shot 22.8 percent (13-of-57) from the field. CCNY went 6-for-21 (28.6 percent) from long range and 10-for-18 (55.6 percent) at the charity stripe.
For the Hawks, Janine Conway tallied a game-high 35 points, including the 1,000
th of her career. She added 10 rebounds to complete a double-double. Theresa Leung finished with 18 points, four assists and three steals, while Isabelle Santos registered 10 points off the bench. In addition, Kimberly Lau notched seven points, six boards, five assists and three steals. Hunter shot 55.1 percent (43-of-78) from the floor, 37.8 percent (14-of-37) from three-point land, and 61.5 percent (8-of-13) at the free throw line.
CCNY is back in action on Friday, when first-place Brooklyn (9-5, 4-0 CUNYAC) visits Nat Holman Gymnasium at 5 p.m. It will be the start of a two-game homestand for the Beavers.
